SIBU: St John’s Extension Centre (SJEC) Anglican Church Sibu Jaya will hold a fund-raising pre-Gawai Dayak dinner on April 26 at Sheraton Restaurant at 7pm.

The function’s organising chairman Umpie Awi said proceeds from the dinner would be used to buy a piece of land for Anglican Church in Sibu Jaya to erect a church building.

“Currently, we are renting on the first floor of a shop house at Sibu Jaya Commercial Centre, where we have our weekly Sunday mass and other
activities.

“The place is a bit congested as it can only accommodate about 100 people. Our regular attendance is about 200.”

SJEC serves the faithful in Sibu Jaya as well as neighbouring places such as Naman, Rascom Camp, Mile 14 Camp, Kemuyang and Durin.

“We held a similar event last year, and raised about RM20,000. “Our target this year is RM30,000,” Umpie said.

He expected some 550 guests from Bintangor, Sarikei, Saratok, Debak, Betong, and other parts of Sarawak at the dinner which is expected to be graced by Deputy Minister of Rural and Regional Development Datuk Alexander Nanta Linggi.

Umpie said they also hoped to foster fellowship and promote ecumenism through the dinner.
