KUCHING: Welders who graduate from Giat Mara technical training centres will find it easier to secure jobs in the same field following a tripartite partnership involving Brooke Dockyard & Engineering Works Corporation, Giat Mara and Gigih Avenue Sdn Bhd.

The smart partnership between the three parties was sealed via a memorandum of understanding (MoU) witnessed by Demak Laut assemblyman Dr Hazland Hipni here yesterday.

Brooke Dockyard chairman Datuk Abang Abdul Karim Tun Openg in his welcoming speech said the partnership was aimed at providing job opportunities to graduates from technical training centres including Giat Mara.

“Previously, graduates from these technical training centres sought jobs in the relevant fields on their own but often they did not put their skills into full use probably because of lack of information on opportunities in the upstream oil and gas industry.

“Some of those who graduated from these technical training schools even ended up doing jobs that did not require the skills acquired, which was a waste,” he said.

With the MoU signed yesterday, selected students taking up welding at eight Giat Mara training centres throughout the state will continue training at Giat Mara-Gigih Avenue Advance Welding Training Centre at Mara Industrial Area in Demak Laut, and from there the trainees will be attached with Brooke Dockyard for two months’ industrial training to prepare them for the Welder’s Qualification Test (WQT) before being offered job placement.

“This MoU is a win-win situation for all parties concerned apart from providing opportunities for youths to secure high income salaries in the oil and gas sector, and shipping to generate economy, especially for Santubong parliamentary constituency.”

The MoU yesterday was signed by Abdul Karim for Brooke Dockyard while Giat Mara was represented by its CEO Datuk Mohd Rosdi Ismail and Gigih Avenue by its chairman Abdul Rashid Datuk Mohd Sidek.

Both Rosdi and Rashid expressed their confidence that the joint effort would help the nation produce a highly skilled workforce for a high income economy to achieve fully developed nation status by 2020.
