GEORGE TOWN: Tanjong Bungah assemblyman Teh Yee Cheu, from DAP, yesterday urged Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng and Penang Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Teng Chang Yeow to state their stand on the proposed implementation of hudud by PAS in Kelantan.
He said the DAP-led state government and BN chief should state clearly to the people whether they supported the plan or not.
“The Penang chief minister and state BN chairman should be responsible to answer this question. I am against the implementation of hudud in Malaysia at this time as it is not suitable to be implemented in a multiracial society like Malaysia,” he said at a press conference, here.
Teh said the implementation of hudud would also be in conflict with the Federal Constitution upon which the nation was formed after independence.
He said the implementation of hudud would be a regressive approach as it would not be able to fulfil current needs, besides not being in tune with the trends in a civilised world community.
Teh said DAP’s ally, PAS, was not honest to the voters as its propaganda before the 13th general election was to set a welfare state and not an Islamic state.
“I fear that the implementation of hudud is just a preliminary step for PAS to create an Islamic state. This will be a threat to gender equality, human rights, culture and the economy,” he said.
The Kelantan PAS government, through the lawmakers, plan to table a motion in Parliament this June to allow for the implementation of hudud, the Islamic criminal law, in the state.
However, the move is strongly opposed by DAP as it was never unanimously agreed upon by the opposition coalition comprising PAS, DAP and Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR). — Bernama
