SIBU: About 90 Rela officers and members from Kanowit, Julau and Pakan districts yesterday attended a one-day crisis management course held at the Farmer’s Organisation office in Julau district.

Silon Janda, who represented the state Rela director at its closing ceremony, hoped with the course the respective district units could form their own Crisis Management Team (CMT).

He said the members could then help the police, the Fire and Rescue Department , the Civil Defence Department and others in fighting fire outbreaks or when facing natural calamities like floods, in rural longhouses.

They could also assist in search and rescue operations or perform simple life saving procedures, among others.

He added that the state had now 33 district Rela units with about 220,938 members.

“Beside the CMT, we would also like them to form their own Skuad Muda Rela or Young Rela Youth Squad to assist the jobless youths and school dropouts especially in the rural areas,” he said.

Silon said by engaging them, their talents and skills would be put to good use in serving their own community.

Julau MP Datuk Joseph Salang officiated at the ceremony.

He also presented Rela uniforms to the three units.

Julau/Pakan district Rela officer Moses Sipan and Julau District Officer Mohd Said Atoi were among those present.
