KUCHING: A site supervisor died from multiple stab wounds to his chest and neck during a botched robbery at a construction site at Jalan Matang Baru yesterday afternoon.

Stunned workers reacting to the news of Yiu’s demise.

The deceased.

The deceased, Yiu Teng Boon, 58, was pronounced dead at Sarawak General Hospital at 2.15pm despite repeated attempts to resuscitate him.

Yiu, originally from Kampung Mundu in Roban, is believed to have been attacked with a sharp object by two unknown men who arrived at the construction site on the pretext of looking for jobs.

Workers at the site, where the proposed Semariang Bridge is currently being built, described Yiu as well-liked by all his subordinates and expressed their shock at his sudden demise.

The killing, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Padawan District Police, comes hot on the heels of the murder of two British medical students who were knifed to death at Abell Road early the previous morning.

Padawan deputy district police chief DSP Yap Fui Lee said initial investigation revealed that two men on a motorcycle had trespassed the site — a restricted area with guards posted at the entry point — and approached Yiu if there were any jobs available.

“Based on the account of the workers, the deceased was initially with them at the main construction area before he rode a motorcycle towards the office about 100 metres away to fetch something.

“It was then that two outsiders approached him and stabbed him six times on the neck during what we believe was a scuffle after the pair tried to rob him,” said Yap.

After the attack, Yiu fled to nearby wooden quarters where he came into contact with a technician repairing a piece of machinery.

He related the incident to the technician before collapsing on the ground, and was rushed by colleagues to hospital where he died shortly after.

Yap said there were no witnesses to the crime, but expressed confidence that the culprits would eventually be caught and brought to justice.

“We will be recording the statements of the security guards at the guard post at that time. There is only one way in and out of the site, so the guards must have seen the suspects when they arrived and left on their motorcycle.”

The case has been classified as murder under Section 302 of the Penal Code.
