PORT KLANG: Port Klang Authority (PKA), Westports and the Marine Department have initiated investigations into an incident at Westports, about a kilometre away here yesterday, where two container ships brushed against each other, causing a fire to break out on board the vessels.

PKA chairman Tan Sri Kong Cho Ha said the authorities were taking precaution to ensure there was no impact on the environment due to the incident involving the MV Al Riffa and the MV San Felipe.

“PKA is also working closely with the relevant agencies, the owners or ship managers, and the experts appointed by the ship’s insurance company to completely extinguish the fire on board the MV San Felipe,” he said.

He was speaking to reporters after a meeting with PKA general manager Datuk Capt David Padman and Westports Malaysia chief operating officer Ian James on the incident here yesterday.

About 7.30pm, MV San Felipe had brushed against MV Al Riffa which was berthed at an adjacent wharf, resulting in fires to break out on board both ships. — Bernama
