SO Sibu reveals calendar of activities

SIBU: Special Olympics Sibu Chapter has pledged to continue providing opportunities for athletes with special needs to take up sports and games of their choice.

The chapter released a press statement on its activities carried out this year.

It began with the Special Olympics Sibu Ten-Pin Bowling Championship in March 16 which attracted 10 athletes.

In May, eight athletes and two coaches accepted an invitation by Special Olympics Kuching Chapter to another bowling championship.

The Sibu team bagged the `Best Visiting Team’ award and `Most Sporting Bowler’ title by Clement Belun Besmond.

On June 26, the Special Olympic Sibu and SMK Lanang organised a basic course to train teachers in coaching bocce which is featured in Special Olympics International Games.

The course led to the inaugural Special Olympics Bocce Competition Sibu Division held on Nov 7.

Eighty six children with special needs joined the competition.

Special Olympics Sibu sent three athletes to compete in Special Olympics Macau 21st Inter-City Invitation Game from Oct 24-27.

The athletes were Joseph Chieng who participated in the 50m run and softball throw, Lewis Tiong in the 200m and long jump, and Clement Belun Desmond in the 100m and shot put.

They collected two gold, one bronze and two fourth placings.

On Nov 1-5, the Sibu team finished sixth at the 3rd South East Asia 5-a-side Unified Football Tournament held in Brunei Darussalam.

Sibu chapter also sent athlete Kong Wen Wen to attend the Athlete Leadership Programme in Singapore on Nov 17.
