MIRI: A group of people from central Baram recently set up a development committee to spearhead development planned by the government under the Rural Growth Centre (RGC) of Long Lama.
The idea of setting up of the committee was mooted by Baram community leader Temenggong Elizabeth Deng who is spearheading the pro tem committee as its chairman.
The central Baram consists of more than 10,000 rural folks from eight longhouses.
“It covers villages from Long Laput up to Long Na’ah. The pro tem committee comprises local community leaders, village chiefs and intellectuals,” Elizabeth told The Borneo Post recently.
She said the pro tem committee would act as an agent to monitor development projects within the area, and propose sustainable short and long term projects for the central Baram, especially in the next Malaysia Plan (11th MP).
“Consultation with local leaders is needed to ensure smooth implementation to raise the socio-economic status of people living in the affected area.
“With the pro tem committee, we want to ensure that development projects are implemented efficiently to benefit our people,” Elizabeth said.
Leading the pro tem committee, she gave a briefing on the objective of setting up the committee to Miri Resident Antonio Kahti Galis and two assemblyman for the area, namely Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau and Baram MP Anyie Ngau.
She was happy that the three of them gave their fullest support to the pro tem committee, and advised the committee to work closely with the government.
