SIBU: King tide measuring 1.6 metres, the highest for the month, coupled with water from the upper reaches caused certain portions of Lanang Road here to be inundated yesterday.

However, areas covered by phases one and two of the flood mitigation project were not affected.

When contacted yesterday, Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) Sibu divisional engineer Ting Sing Kwong said this was due to king tide and water rushing down from Balleh.

“And it (the affected area) is outside our protected area but inside our proposed phase three area,” Ting told The Borneo Post.

Long Singut in Balleh River recorded a rainfall of 108.5mm on Jan 20.

“Anything more than 60mm is considered high,” Ting said.

Another round of king tide was expected from 11pm last night till midnight. Ting also advised residents in low-lying areas not to let down their guard.

He said king tide measuring 1.5m was expected here on Feb 19, 20 and 21. He did not discount the possibility of flooding in low-lying areas here during the Lunar celebration if king tide and incessant rain came together.
