Anti-narcotics police conduct 2 raids and arrest 5 drug addicts

KUCHING: An unmarried couple was arrested by anti-narcotics police for drug possession following a raid at a service apartment here on Friday.

The suspects, a 26-year-old male from KampungSerasot in Bau and a 23- year-old female from KampungMelaban in Kota Samarahan, were arrested around 1.30pm by personnel from the state Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID) following a tip-off.

According to sources, police first detained the male suspect at the apartment’scar park at JalanSimpangTiga and found him to be in possession of roughly eight grammes of syabu following a body search.

The man then led police to a unit on the fifth floor where another packet of syabu, weighing approximately 1.5 grammes, was found on the couch in the living room.

He and his female companion, who was in the unit at the time of the raid, were subsequently hauled to NCID headquarters and are being investigated under sections12(2) and 39A(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

Also on Friday, Padawan NCID personnel arrested three persons,following a raid at Taman Suria in Matang Jaya, for drug-related activities.

Led by Inspector Jason Baya, the team arrived at the house after receiving a tip-off and detained two men, aged between 30 and 48, and a 32-year-old woman after discovering a straw tube containing syabu in their possession.

All three, who are jobless and did not possess prior criminal records, later tested positive for drug and were placed in the lockup pending further investigation under section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

A Padawan NCID spokesperson said the suspects could each face a fine not exceeding RM100,000, or up to five years imprisonment, or both, if convicted.
