KOTA KINABALU: The contribution of the alumni of Taiwan to the development in Sabah is evident, and their achievements serve as an encouragement for Sabahan students who are currently pursuing their education in Taiwan.

Minister of Special Tasks, Datuk Teo Chee Kang, said this during a courtesy call by Taiwan Alumni Association of Sabah president Lawrence S.H. Ting, and his committee members recently.

In the past, Teo said degrees obtained from Taiwanese universities were not recognized here due to some reasons. However, the Taiwan alumni in Sabah persevered and worked hard. Today, many of them have achieved remarkable achievements in their respective fields, he said.

During the courtesy call, Teo accepted the invitation by the association to grace the Chinese New Year cultural show to be held at the National Department for Culture and Arts (JKKN) here on March 17.

The aim of the cultural show is to raise funds to assist Sabahan students who wish to further their studies in Taiwan. The funds raised will be offered as student loans to students from poor family background.

Ting informed Teo that the association aimed to raise RM1.2 million through the event, adding that the association has raised RM900,000 to date, thanks to donations by Taiwan alumni.

He believed that the association could achieve the target of RM1.2 million.

Ting added that the Chinese New Year cultural show would also be held at the Tenom community hall on March 15 to raise funds for the Tenom Tshung Tsin Secondary School to build an information technology building.
