KOTA KINABALU: The Fire and Rescue Department has terminated the services of 33 of its officers last year due to disciplinary issues.

In 2013, the total number of officers who were sacked due to disciplinary issues were 41, according to the state’s Fire and Rescue Department director general Datuk Wira Haji Wan Mohd Nor Ibrahim at the closing ceremony of the 2015 Forum on Integrity Reinforcement held at Kompleks Pentadbiran Persekutuan near here yesterday.

Cases that would render a dismissal include drug abuse, absence from work for more than seven days (without providing any reasons) and being charged with criminal conduct, including corruption.

He also said last year, a total of 137 disciplinary cases were brought to the attention of the department’s disciplinary authority as compared to only 88 cases in 2013.

He said the increase in cases brought to the attention of the authority was a positive trend as it showcased the seriousness of the department in addressing integrity-related matters.

“We have instructed all our officers to report any integrity-related offence in order to create a disciplined work area,” he said.

It was also mentioned that nationwide, a total of 4,693 civil servants were suspected of corruption involvement and 1,077 cases were being investigated while 847 cases were charged.

A total of 71 agencies involving 450 personnel attended the forum yesterday.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Haji Aman who was represented by Datuk Bolkiah Ismail said in his speech that the civil service was required to adapt to changes as well as be a step forward as the driver, thinker and implementer towards further improving the welfare of the people and the country.

He said this was in line with the implementation of the civil administration’s modernisation and transformation initiatives which were geared to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the government’s delivery system.

He also expressed that the state government was committed towards reinforcing integrity values among Sabah’s civil servants.

“We support and welcome the implementation of integrity-related programmes as they will help reinforce integrity values,” he said.
