KUALA LUMPUR: Police have received over 100 reports involving violent incidents that occurred throughout the polling process of the Permatang Pauh parliamentary by-election in Penang on Thursday.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said the action of these irresponsible individuals showed that they were uncivilised.
“I think the people in this country is already matured and such incidents should not have happened.
“They made provocations against the authorities, fight among their own party supporters and destroy government property,” he said.
He said this at a media conference after officiating the Integrity and Compliance Standard (JIPS) director handing-over-of-duties ceremony at Bukit Aman senior officers mess here yesterday.
On Thursday the by-election was tainted by several violent incidents, among which were the dispute that almost led to a fight among PKR and PAS supporters and injuries sustained by a media personnel and a police personnel from stones and water bottles thrown at them.
The situation forced the Election Commission (EC) senior officers to cancel their routine visit to polling district centres after being advised by police.
On the police report lodged in connection to the information leak at the Tabung Haji (TH) Board management division, Khalid said the case was likely to be investigated under the Official Secrets Act. — Bernama
Yesterday TH group chief executive officer Datuk Johan Abdullah TH, via a media statement, denied purchasing the Signature Tower (Phase 2) at the Tun Razak Exchange (TRX) financial centre as was reported in a blog.
He had said the information leak through a proposal paper could not be used as evidence that the investment was confirmed.
Earlier Khalid witnessed the handing over and receiving of duties from Bukit Aman JIPS director Datuk Zubaidah Md Ismail to DCP Datuk Abdul Ghafar Rajab who has held the post in an acting capacity.
Datuk Zubaidah who has served in the police force for 40 years is the first woman to have led JIPS since the department was established on July 24, 2014. — Bernama
