Fruit seller survives morning shooting

MIRI: A 34-year-old fruit seller survived being shot in broad daylight by his neighbor who lived across the road from him at Bekenu Asli today.

In the 10.55am incident, the victim who was about to open the family’s house gate to go to town was shot using a shotgun by a 37-year-old male suspect from a distance of about 40 metres.

The victim suffered injuries to his face, neck and chest and was taken to Miri Hospital for immediate treatment.
He has however been reported to be in stable condition.

The victim’s wife who was not at home when the incident struck claimed that her family did not know much about the suspect’s family and was surprised when her husband was shot.

The suspect was arrested at his house after the shooting.

Miri police chief ACP Gan Tian Kee who confirmed the case when contacted today said that the case was being investigated under Section 307 of the penal code which carries a maximum penalty of 20 years’ imprisonment for attempted murder and Section 8 of the Firearms (Increased Penalties) Act 1971 for possessing firearms.

He said the police dispatched to the scene also recovered a homemade shotgun from the suspect’s house believed to have been the one used in the shooting and a pellet.
