KUCHING: Two teenagers were killed while a third was injured after the borrowed car they were travelling in slammed into a lamp post at Jalan Lapangan Terbang yesterday.

The deceased, both 19, were identified as Abraham Edward Daut of Taman Sakura Indah in Batu Kawah and Evan Begrie Martin Siba, whose MyKad listed him as hailing from Spaoh.

The incident happened around 3.30am when the pair and another 18-year-old male friend were travelling in a car driven by Evan towards the city from Kuching International Airport (KIA).

The vehicle, said to belong to Abraham’s cousin, is believed to have gone out of control along a bend on the road before slamming into a lamp post at the road divider and landing on its roof.

One of the victims was flung out of the car into the middle of the road, while the other was found with his legs pinned inside the wreckage.

Firemen from the Batu Lintang station were despatched to the scene to help extricate the partially-pinned body of the killed teen along with the surviving victim, who was trapped in the back seat of the overturned car.

The lone survivor, who suffered lacerations all over his face and body, was sent to the Sarawak General Hospital and warded for treatment.

Meanwhile, Abraham’s family members rushed to the scene upon learning of the accident and became inconsolable when they saw the body.

A family member disclosed that Abraham was the youngest of three siblings and a final-year diploma student at the Kuching Vocational College at Jalan Batu Lintang.

Sources later revealed that the trio had earlier attended a barbeque session at another friend’s house before adjourning to KIA along with Abraham’s cousin to hang out with several other friends.

It was there that they borrowed the cousin’s car to head to the city to buy drinks for the rest of their friends, who only found out what had befallen the teens when they called the mobile phone of one of the deceased and was told of the tragedy by a member of the public who answered the call.

District police chief ACP Roslan Bek Ahmad said police had classified the incident under Section 4(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
