MIRI: The Miri City Council (MCC) has removed a total of 2,997 illegal advertisements being displayed across the city from January to November this year.
Miri Mayor Lawrence Lai said the illegal advertisements came in the form of banners, buntings, streamers and billboards.
“The removal of illegal advertisements is the council’s ongoing effort after receiving numerous public complaints on the matter.
“We are very serious on this matter and are hoping the owners of these illegal advertisements would voluntarily take down their advertisement materials. Failing which, we will not hesitate to take legal action against them,” he told a press conference after the meet-the-people session at Mosjaya Commercial Centre yesterday.
For those who failing to take their advertisements down, the council, Lai added, might charge the owners for the cost of
removal at RM300 per piece for not complying with the Guidelines on Advertisement at Public Places For Local Authorities in Sarawak and The Local Authorities (Advertisement) By-laws 2012 which came into force on October 2012.
Thus, he called for cooperation from the owners to take down their illegal advertisement materials on their own.
