KUCHING: A homeless man suffered a nasty stab wound on his face after he was waylaid by six youths and robbed of his possessions early yesterday.

The victim, in his 50s, had just left a 24-hour coffee shop at Mile 3 and was making his way on foot to Mile 3 Maong bazaar when the incident occurred around 12.30am.

According to him, he spotted six male youths on three motorcycles staring at him from a short distance away and decided to make his way back to the coffee shop as he felt threatened by their presence.

As soon as he turned around, however, the youths caught up to him on their motorcycles and rained blows on him before one of them stabbed the homeless man on the face with a sharp weapon.

They then grabbed a bag he was carrying – containing three mobile phones and some cash – and sped off as several members of the public came to his aid.

A police patrol car arrived at the scene after being notified and police helped to take the victim to the Sarawak General Hospital where he was given treatment prior to being discharged.

The victim, who collects and sells recyclables for a living, estimated his losses at RM1,000.
