KUCHING: About 200 dengue cases are reported from Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) areas annually although there has been no death resulting from the disease so far.
MPP chairman Lo Khere Chiang, who disclosed this yesterday, said most of the dengue cases occurred in the villages although urban dwellers are equally susceptible to the virus.
“The lack of fatality is due to increased public awareness on the disease and our constant efforts in eradicating mosquito breeding grounds within the council’s jurisdiction,” he said when met by reporters after launching an MPP community programme at Chinese Community Hall Batu Kitang here.
“We must continue to be vigilant and ensure that all possible breeding grounds for the aedes mosquitoes are eradicated.
“At the same time, we need to build up our antibody because dengue is one virus that we can control even though we cannot kill the virus.”
Nearly 100 pupils from SJK Chung Hua Batu Kitang and SK Batu Kitang participated in the half-day programme.
Addressing the pupils earlier, Lo, who has been named BN candidate for Batu Kitang, urged them to always remind their parents on the importance of keeping their surrounding clean.
“Get rid of stagnant water because this is a breeding ground for dengue mosquitoes. We must keep the environment clean.
“Education must start from young and children need to be properly guided as they can also play a role to tell their parents about the do’s and don’ts.”
At the function, Special Affairs Department information officer Felicia Nonima presented four table fans each to both schools.
