KUCHING: Sarawak Museum will be sending a contingent consisting of 28 staff to participate in a week long sports carnival in Alor Setar, Kedah, from May 15 to 21.
Acting director of Sarawak Museum Dr Charles Leh said that the sports carnival is part of a week-long event to commemorate International Museum Day which falls on May 17.
The contingent will be participating in seven sporting events namely Dart, Carrom, ‘Sepak Takraw Bulatan’, Bowling, Ping pong, Futsal and Badminton, he said before he received the state flag from permanent secretary to the Ministry of Social Development Kameri Affandi yesterday.
Members of the contingent will also be involved in Traditional Sports like fishing Ikan Puyu (Climbing Perch Fishing), Duck Catching, Gunny Sack Race and many more, he added.
Leh said apart from sports, the events were also aimed at fostering and building stronger relationship among the museum staff in the country.
“There will be a seminar and exhibition to interact with one another and we will be having a community outreach programme. We have identified 10 families whom we want to help through this CSR work,” he said
He also hoped the contingent could promote the 18th Malaysia Games (Sukma XVIII) which will be held in Kuching from July 22 to 31 as such sporting events could bring economic benefits through a spill-over effect on the business community.
On other matters related to the museum, Leh said the new museum building would be completed on schedule in 2019.
“We are also doing conservation of the current colonial museum building and preserving the iron cast structure aquarium and it would be turned into a relaxing area and recreational spot for visitors to the museum garden,” he said.
