SERIAN: A farmer from Kampung Siantan Baru here had the shock of his life after he discovered a newborn girl dumped in front of his house early yesterday morning.

District police chief DSP Chung Aik Peng said the 51-year-old farmer woke up around 5.30am after hearing incessant cries of what he thought was a baby coming from outside his house and decided to check the source of the noise.

He said the farmer soon spotted the naked infant in a chair in front of his house and immediately wrapped the baby in a piece of cloth before alerting the police.

Following the discovery, a team from the district CID led by Inspector Mohd Fais Zubir arrived at the scene, located along Jalan Tangga By-pass, to investigate and found traces of blood not far from the farmer’s house around 8am.

“The CID team also found a pair of scissors, believed to have been used to cut the baby’s umbilical cord at the same spot and later followed the blood trail with the help of a police canine unit to a nearby house,” he said when contacted yesterday.

Upon entering the house, Chung said they came across a 26-year-old woman, believed to be the newborn’s mother, in a weak state in the kitchen, with further traces of blood in one of the rooms in the house.

The baby is currently being monitored at the district hospital here, while the mother, who is unmarried, was sent to the Sarawak General Hospital in Kuching for treatment.

Meanwhile, state CID chief SAC Dev Kumar condemned the baby dumping in a statement issued yesterday, calling it a ‘despicable act’ which endangered the life of an innocent child.

“The state CID does not tolerate despicable acts of indiscriminately abandoning innocent babies and endangering their lives.

“We have classified this case as abandonment of a child under 12 years of age by a parent and we are investigating it under Section 317 of the Penal Code,” he said, while also congratulating the Serian CID for solving the case within hours of it being reported.

He also confirmed that police had identified the father of the baby and are now in the process of tracking him down for investigation.
