LIMBANG: The road accident that occurred at Batu Danau Bridge on Friday due to a damaged ‘bridge joint’ should be a lesson to the Public Works Department to do maintenance work speedily and according to specifications.

Limbang MP Hasbi Habibollah said since motorists’ safety and lives were at stake, maintenance works should be done within 24 hours to prevent major accidents and unnecessary loss of life.

“PWD should be serious in carrying out maintenance and repair work to the damaged joint to prevent unnecessary accident,” he said when asked by reporters to comment on the damaged bridge joint that caused the road accident.

A van driver sustained minor injuries, but his vehicle was badly damaged in the incident.

It was learnt the damage was the second to happen this week although maintenance was done when it was first damaged earlier in the week.

Hasbi also wanted PWD to be serious in doing maintenance and repair work on other sections of the road, especially those with potholes.

Limbang Resident Datuk Maria Hasman concurred with Hasbi. He expressed regret that such accident should happen due to the damaged bridge joint, which caused a public outcry in the social media.

Batu Danau Bridge is part of the proposed Pan Borneo Highway that links Sarawak, Brunei and Sabah.

It is the only access from Miri to Lawas. It is also used by Bruneians to commute between Limbang and Temburong in Brunei and onto Kota Kinabalu.
