MRSM beat Tebedu to retain Don Drury Cup

KUCHING: MRSM Kuching successfully defence their Don Drury Memorial Trophy Sevens U-16 at the Song Kheng Hai Rugby Ground last Saturday.

The MRSM A boys with mesmerized SMK Tebedu with their passing, handling, sidesteps and powerful tackles to win 41- 0.

Both teams were unbeaten in the pool stage. MRSM head coach Vincent Nelos attributed the victory to his players and the support of the school and parents.

In the Plate category, SMK Asajaya beat SMK Wira Penrissen 10-7 in a hard-fought final. SMK Muara Tuang won the Bowl category after beating SMK Sungai Maong 10-0. They also brought home two titles after their Team C won the Spoon category by thrashing MRSM B 28-0 in the final while Team B defeated MRSM C 12-5 for the Shield trophy.

The 120 young players appeared to enjoy themselves while trying to showcase their skills despite being new in the game.

Tournament director Wan Ahmad is looking forward to the involvement of these students in more rugby tournaments organised by Kuching Rugby Football Club (KRFC).

The guest of honour Sue Drury gave away the prizes for the Cup category.

Dick Bentham, the club treasurer, presented the prizes for the Plate and Bowl winners while head referee Hamizan Rosli referee handed over trophies to the Spoon and Shield victors.

Ten teams from six schools in Kuching and Samarahan took part in the fourth edition of the tournament.
