Hunt for Pokemon begins in M’sia

KUALA LUMPUR: After a long wait, Malaysians can now be a part of the location-based augmented reality game, Pokemon GO.

Despite no official announcement on its launch in Malaysia, Android and iOS users had been able to download the free-to-play game application via the Google Play Store and Apple App Store yesterday.

Student Mohd Haris Adam said he was so thrilled to be able to download the application and had begun playing the game immediately and caught 10 Pokemon characters so far.

“I randomly searched for the application, and the next minute I know, I was already downloading the game via the App Store,” he told Bernama here yesterday.

Also sharing the joy of being able to be a part of the game that had taken the world by storm was Aisyah Nadia Othman, 26, a marketing executive who  described the game as ‘adventurous to its core’.

“I have gone to many PokeStops and found other players there…people who are as excited as I am…Welcome Pokemon GO!,” she said.

For engineer Syed Mohamad Nukman Syed Nadzri, 29, the game was something so close to him since childhood and having to have to be a part of this game was simply priceless.

“About 20 years ago, I played my first Pokemon game on a Nintendo Game Boy. The most exciting thing about it was trying to catch as many Pokemon as possible,” he said.

“Now that Pokemon GO finally here in Malaysia, it gives a sense on nostalgia and excitement to catch them all over again,” said Syed Mohamad Nukman.

He said the game also gave him the opportunity to explore places that he never knew existed around his neighbourhood.

Pokemon GO, developed by Niantic Incorporation of Nintendo USA has set a new wave of augmented reality game in the history of smartphone applications. It is a conventional ‘hide and seek’ game where players are required to find and fight virtual characters based on real-world location detected via smartphone. — Bernama
