LABUAN:  Swift action by Labuan police has resolved the biggest ever cable theft so far this year involving telecommunication cables worth more than RM20,000 belonging to Telekom Malaysia Berhad.

The good market value for copper seemed to have prompted the culprits for stealing the cables.

Labuan police chief Supt Adzhar Othman said six men, all of whom were unemployed, were arrested in connection with the theft on Aug 17 and 18 at different places in town.

“We managed to resolve the case less than 48 hour upon receiving the police report on Aug 15, we resolved the case and nabbed the culprits who reaped a whopping RM11,000 from the sale of the cooper at a scrap iron factory here,” he said a press conference yesterday.

Adzhar said the suspects admitted to having been actively involved in cable theft since June this year.

A Myvi car and motorcycle believed to have been used for the illegal activity were also seized for further investigation. – Bernama
