KUCHING: Malaysian Financial Planning Council (MFPC) Sarawak chapter is holding a one-day programme cum seminar to enhance financial literacy among women at Imperial Hotel on Oct 3.

Pending the inaugural programme, MFPC plans to make it an annual event.

According to MFPC national vice president for Research and Publication, James Bong Kee Chin, the programme is designed to help women in Sarawak make well-informed decisions regarding their earnings, spending, savings and investment.

“This programme here is geared specifically towards women to manage their finances better. As national data indicates, women live at least four years longer than men, thus we need to empower women,” he said at a press conference yesterday.

Apart from that, financial planning will also stabilize women who are single, divorced and widowed.

The module of the programme is customised to leverage women who have little or no knowledge in investment in capital markets to understand what financial literacy is all about.

“It also aims to equip them with financial wellbeing and basic knowledge on opportunities in the capital markets. This is because many female workers work hard for a living but through this education, it can make their money work harder to supplement their family income,” said Bong.

Four professional speakers will conduct the seminar which is scheduled to start at 9am while Minister of Women, Family and Community Development Datuk Seri Rohani Karim is slated to deliver the seminar’s key note address.

MFPC Sarawak chapter chairman Jesse Ling Sik Woo reminded those who are interested in attending the seminar to register with the organisers as seats are selling out fast.

They have until the end of this month for seat reservations which are limited to 200. Admission fee is RM30 per person. The organisers can be contacted for registration or further information at 010-7886288 (Chang KC) or e-mail [email protected].

“Besides women, we also welcome men as well. It is open to all who are interested in understanding the importance of personal financial planning, concept of investment in the capital market, being informed on facilities to participate in the retail market and learn to save right to have funds channelled for investment,” added Ling.

Also present at the press conference were the programme’s other project committee members.
