SIBU: A 26-year-old mother was sentenced to a year’s imprisonment by the Sessions’ Court yesterday after she pleaded guilty to abusing her 3-year-old son.

Raynitta Raymond was charged under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, punishable under Section 31(1) of the same act.

The Section provides for a fine not exceeding RM20,000 or a jail term not exceeding 10 years or both.

Under Section 31(2) of the same act, the court also ordered the accused to be on a three-year bond of good behaviour.

According to the charge, Raynitta abused her 3-year-old son, who is the older of her two children, at a house in Sibu Jaya between 2pm and 4pm on Nov 5, which resulted in soft tissue injury on his left arm, right parietal region and abrasion at the upper back.

In mitigation, she told the court that she felt remorseful for what she had done and asked for a lenient sentence.

She revealed that she was a housewife while her husband worked as a school gardener.
