KOTA KINABALU: A 49-year-old husband was jailed for 12 months by the Magistrate’s Court here yesterday for lashing out at his wife and hitting her for ordering him to do house chores.

Magistrate Stephanie Sherron Abbie imposed the sentence on Ramzi Opong after he pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 323 of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of up to one year or a maximum fine of RM2,000 or both, upon conviction.

Ramzi had voluntarily caused hurt to his 43-year-old wife in the toilet of a house at Kampung Rampayan, Manggatal here at 6.10pm on December 10, 2016.

Based on the facts of the case, the accused was happy with his wife for ordering him to do household chores.

Thus, he punched his wife’s left arm and pushed her head towards a wall as well as kicked her into the toilet, causing the wife to fall down and injured her knee.

She yelled at her father, who lived next door, for help while the accused ran away from the house.

The wife lodged a police report on December 11, 2016, claiming that a misunderstanding had occurred between her and her husband, which caused a bruise on her left arm, swollen head and injured knee.

Prosecuting officer Inspector Rasydan Jasni prosecuted.
