Drug trafficking case involving Indian national transferred to High Court

KUCHING: A magistrates court here yesterday transferred to the High Court here yesterday the case of an Indian national who allegedly trafficked in 1,944g of methamphetamine.

Magistrate Portia Tham Ong Leng made the order on Kumar Amir after allowing the application by the prosecution to transfer the case to the High Court for plea and trial.

The accused faces the mandatory death sentence upon conviction under Section 39B (1) (a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

No plea was recorded.

The date for the proceeding in the High Court is yet to be fixed.

He was ordered to be further held in custody under Section 259 of the Criminal Procedure Code pending disposal of the case as the offence is non-bailable.

Kumar was caught by the passenger screening unit of Malaysian Customs Department at the arrival hall of Kuching International Aiport for the allegedly trafficking at about 9.15pm on April 23 this year.
