KOTA KINABALU: The Inland Revenue Board Malaysia (IRBM) today launched a nationwide operation codenamed ‘Ops Kutip’ aimed at collecting more than RM326 million in arrears from 3,838 cases.

According to IRBM Chief Executive Officer Datuk Sabin Samitah, the taxes involve cases which are less than two years old.

Speaking to the media after launching the operation here, Sabin said the operation involves 595 staff from the 13 IRBM state offices.

“This operation is not only meant to collect arrears but also to create awareness among taxpayers of their responsibility to keep records and to report their income correctly. They are also advised to pay their taxes within the time frame set,” he said.

He added that IRBM hopes to be able to collect at least 90 per cent of the arrears.

IRBM has tightened its instalment payment method but companies and individual taxpayers who have financial problems can still request to pay in instalments, but there is no guarantee that it will be considered.

“This two day operation will see IRBM officers going to the work or business premises of those identified to try and collect the arrears,” he said.

Sabin disclosed that there are 361 cases involving arrears of RM17,033,331.01 in Sabah,of which 80 are cases involving companies.
