KAPIT: The normally quiet Terasang Market here has been a hive of activity over the past week as members of the Dayak community prepare for the Gawai Dayak celebration.

Many could be seen stocking up on essential goods before they travel back to their respective longhouses for the festival.

Popular items include eggs, stewing hens, pork, fish, chicken wings, and beer.

Industrious ladies have also used the opportunity to sell cakes and traditional snacks at the market to earn extra income for the celebration.

Meanwhile, thousands are travelling to Kapit on their way back to their respective longhouses.

Tuai Rumah Achan Renang said the celebration at his longhouse will begin at midnight on

June 1 with a ‘miring’ ceremony to invite their ancestors and gods to join in the celebration.

He said Gawai Dayak is a time to celebrate the good harvest and hope for better things to come.

“Children doing well in school, farmers earning from their land, those involved in business to make a better fortune, and for the sick to be healed soon,” he said.

The 45-door longhouse at Sungai Amang, Jalan Selirik is normally quiet throughout the year but will be buzzing with activities for Gawai Dayak as residents return for the festival.
