KUCHING: The elderly are advised to stay active to prevent chronic diseases, improve mood and lower chances of injury.

With regular exercise the elderly would enjoy many health benefits and their children’s and grandchildren’s success, said the Mayor of Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Datuk James Chan yesterday.

“Exercise is important for us all, especially seniors.

With consistent exercise, we would have healthier hearts,” he told the 400 senior citizens  at the Sports Toto’s ‘Chinese New Year Ang Pow Donation Campaign’ held at the Che Hia Khor Moral Uplifting Society Sarawak at Ellis Road yesterday.

He also requested their continual cooperation with the council by keeping the city clean because a clean city helps people stay healthy as well as improve environmental security.

“Even though Sports Toto is a legal gambling group, they never forget the needy. This event is significant because it shows a caring corporate body that ensures the needy are not forgotten during festive occasions. I am honoured to be invited to their event,” he said.

His message to those celebrating the coming Chinese New Year is “I wish everyone a prosperous New Year of the dog, and hope everyone will stay healthy and be happy.”
