Gira says the government will continue to supply the rations to the longhouses in Sapudun, Nanga Taroh and Arip, once the longhouses are reachable and the roads, damaged by floods, are repaired.

SIBU: The floodwater level in many hard-hit areas like Batang Oya, Batang Mukah, Batang Balingian and Sungai Arip has receded.

The only remaining relief centre at SJKC Tong Ah in Selangau was closed yesterday, said Tamin assemblyman Christopher Gira Sambang.

“The situation has now returned to normal.

“I have been informed that the Fire and Rescue Department, Civil Defence Force (APM) and the army would continue to deliver rations to flood victims at longhouses in areas such as Batang Oya, Batang Mukah (and) Batang Balingian,” he told The Borneo Post yesterday when asked for updates on the flood situation in Selangau.

It is learnt that the rations are provided through the state Welfare Department.

“The government will continue to supply the rations to the longhouses in the areas of Sapudun, Nanga Taroh and Arip, once they (longhouses) are reachable and the roads, damaged by floods, are repaired.”

On Saturday, the relief centres at Selangau multi-purpose hall and SK Bukit Arip hall were closed as the situation improved.

Last Thursday, the centre at Sekuau community hall was closed, as the flood victims returned home.

“I was informed that during their stay at the evacuation centres in Selangau, the flood victims received sufficient  foods and the necessary assistance.

They were provided with breakfast, lunch and dinner,” said Gira.

According to the report from Selangau District Education Office, the sky was clear and flood water was receding as at 10am yesterday.

The floodwater level was between one and two inches from the floor inside the class at SK St Mark (M), Selangau.

“The floor surface in the class is expected to be completely dry today, facilitating the cleaning works to be carried out later on. The school still closed, though – the water and electricity supply is yet to be restored.”

The school houses 57 pupils, 14 teachers and seven support staff members.

The floods that hit Selangau had been described as ‘the worst in the last 15 years’, displacing more than 1,000 people from their houses.
