Police track down patient who drove off ambulance

KUCHING: Police tracked down a patient from Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) after he drove off with an ambulance from the Accident and Emergency (A&E) Department today.

According to witnesses, the 36-year-old man from Siol Kandis stole an ambulance belonging to a private hospital at 12.50pm and was found about an hour later in front shopping mall along Jalan Green.

It is learnt that the man was warded at the Yellow Zone yesterday.

A relative said the man had expressed his eargerness for wanting to travel to Serian and exit the ward.

Coincidentally, an ambulance that was referring a patient arrived and as they offloaded the patient, the man hopped into the unattended ambulance and drove off.

After leaving the ambulance by the side of the road, the man was said to have entered the said shopping mall.

Police conducted a search but failed to located the man. He was later found at the hospital moments later.

District police deputy chief Supt Abang Junaidi Abang Annuar who confirmed the case when contacted, said that the man is believed to be a psychiatric patient.
