Boat capsize: Three in family feared drowned, one body found

JULAU: Three family members were reported missing after the longboat they were in capsized at Lubok Sepali, Nanga Ensiring in Sungai Kanowit Thursday night.

Search and Rescue (SAR) team comprising personnel from Fire and Rescue Department, police, Civil Defence Department and longhouse folk, however, found one of the bodies around 12.30pm yesterday.

The body has been identified as Lenny Ingang, 54, mother of the sole survivor, Markus Kaya, 26, who lodged a report at Julau police station around 11.30am yesterday.

According to Marcus, they started their journey back to their longhouse in Nanga Ensiring from Nanga Entabai Jetty around 5pm on Thursday (May 24).

About two hours into their journey, they came to a place called Lubok Sepali where their boat capsized, Markus said.

All three in the boat – his mother, his sister Eiline, 23, and his brother, 6, went down under the swift flowing water, he added.

Bintangor District Fire and Rescue Dept chief, Nicholas Belulin said after receiving the report of the incident from Julau District police headquarters around noon yesterday, they dispatched a team of firemen to join in the SAR operation. They found the first victim (Lenny) around 12.30pm yesterday.

Nicholas’ men were also involved in the SAR operation to locate Anjau Nyua, 66, who was reported missing and feared drowned at Nanga Sayong, Nanga Entabai on Tuesday morning.

Anjau and the remaining two victims in the Nanga Ensering incident have not been found at press time yesterday.
