Members of the public have been warned to stay away from the Lily Pond.
KAPIT: The bacteria Leptospira, which causes leptospirosis, has been detected in the water of the Lily Pond at Jalan Mamora and Jalan Penghulu Nyanggau.
The Kapit District Council Public Health Division (Vector Control) and Health Department have erected signage at the Lily Pond stating that the area is a health hazard.
Members of the public have been warned not to fish, bathe, or swim in the pond as the water is highly contaminated.
Several years ago, the Lily Pond was also gazetted as a health hazard area for a similar reason.
It is believed the problem recurred due to poor drainage.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, leptospirosis is a bacterial disease that affects humans and animals.
Without treatment, leptospirosis can lead to kidney damage, meningitis, liver failure, respiratory distress, and even death.
