SIBU: Former Pelawan assemblyman Vincent Goh Chung Siong passed away at his house at about 2.30am early this morning after suffering from cancer.

He was 67.

Goh, popularly known as Ah Hia among the local community, served Pelawan constituency for two terms from 2001 to 2011.

Goh made his political debut in the 1996 state election where he lost to DAP strongman Wong Sing Nang.

The 1996 state election also saw a sudden swing of votes against the ruling Sarawak Barisan Nasional in several urban constituencies, where DAP won several seats.

In 2001, Goh staged a strong comeback and wrestled the seat back from DAP when he beat DAP’s Ting Chek Ming with an overwhelming majority of 8,445 votes.

He retained the seat in 2006, beating Ting again though with a reduced majority of 974 votes.

In 2011, he lost the seat to DAP’s David Wong who secured 13,318 votes against the 6,927 votes he garnered.

In early 2010s, he retired from political activities after the detection of the cancer.
