SRI AMAN: An open burning activity is believed to have sparked a bush fire which razed about 100 acres of jungle at Kampung Punggu Empelanjau, here on Wednesday.

Civil Defence Force (APM) Sri Aman officer Siti Huzaimah Ibrahim said based on information from village folk, the fire is thought to have been caused by open burning carried out by an elderly villager three days earlier.

“We were informed by the villagers that an elderly resident had been burning garbage near the jungle. They said the fire was not that big at the time, but eventually spread and became bigger – triggering the bush fire,” she said yesterday.

Siti Huzaimah said personnel from APM and the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) here headed to the scene after being informed of the matter at 7.05pm, and were able to bring the situation under control at 11.30pm.

“There were no reports of injuries or casualties received,” she added.
