Murder accused to undergo psychiatric evaluation to determine mental state at time of offence

MIRI: The High Court here yesterday ordered a man accused of killing his girlfriend to be referred to the psychiatric unit of Miri Hospital for a mental evaluation.

Judicial Commissioner Dean Wayne Daly issued the order to determine Abdul Rahim Wahap’s mental state at the time of the offence and whether he is fit to face the charge. Dean also set Nov 1 for further mention of the case.

Abdul Rahim’s assigned counsel Keith Chin had said his client claimed to have heard voices while being detained at the Miri Central Prison, and his family members had also confirmed this.

The 25-year-old from Kampung Piasau Utara is charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries a mandatory death sentence. Abdul Rahim is accused of murdering Yeong Musa, 52, between 9.38am on Nov 28 and 3am on Nov 29, 2017 at Lutong Bridge.

DPP Nur Nisla Abdul Latif prosecuted.
