KUCHING: The Rotary Club of Kuching has received a RM50,000 sponsorship from OCBC Bank for its third charity run.

More than 2,000 participants have registered for the ‘Run With The Army 2.0’, set for flag-off at 6.15am on the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) grounds here this Oct 14.

Many of this year’s runners are repeat participants, coming to support Rotary Club of Kuching’s fund-raising drive while enjoying the fellowship running with the soldiers in the 3km and 10km categories.

The third OCBC-Rotary Run is a run with a difference – participants get to enjoy the fellowship with the soldiers through challenging obstacles along the routes, to see the army’s equipment in a static exhibition and also to explore career opportunities in the Armed Forces at the promotional booths.

According to Rotary Club of Kuching president Nicholas Hon, proceeds from the event would go towards the setting up of a dialysis centre in partnership with Kidney Foundation (NKF) and Kidney Association of Sarawak (KAS); a rural water supply project;

and a rural medical outreach project, which is now in its 13th year.

“About 2,500 people from four villages in Sibu Division will benefit from our rural water project. Once the RM300,000 project is completed, the villagers would no longer depend on rainwater and untreated water from the rivers for their use,” he said.

Speaking on behalf of OCBC Bank, a senior branch manager Jessie Lim said the bank had developed very close relationship with the local community since opening its doors here 70 years ago.

“In recent times, we have been looking to become even more entrenched in the local community, and our involvement in the upcoming ‘OCBC-Rotary Run 2018 – Run With the Army 2.0’ is a clear example of how we collaborate and engage with the local community. You can expect to see all staff members from OCBC Kuching branch participate in the run.”

The event is sanctioned by the Sports Commission of Malaysia.
