KUCHING: Former commander of the Eastern Field Command Lt Gen Datuk Stephen Mundaw has been appointed Sarawak Dayak National Union (SDNU) senior vice president.

Mundaw, 61, has been serving with the Armed Forces for 41 years. He will retire officially on May 31 next year.

When met here yesterday, SDNU president Tan Sri William Mawan Ikom revealed that the first Dayak commander of the infantry and a modern day Iban warrior is amongst the four newly appointed senior vice presidents.

The other three are Federation of Orang Ulu Associations Sarawak Malaysia (Forum) president Antonio Kathi Galis who is also Sarawak Bisaya Association chairman; Dayak Bidayuh National Association president Datu Ik Pahon Joyik and Malaysian Pepper Board director general Dr Harry Wilson Entebang.

Mawan said in consultation with the union supreme executive committee (SEC) on Saturday, he also appointed four vice presidents. They are Sarawak Kenyah National Association president Kennedy Chukpai Ugon; Sarawak Kayan Association chairman Dennis Ngau, Engkilili assemblyman Dr Johnical Rayong Ngipa and Sarawak Tropical Peat Research Institute director Dr Lulie Meling.

Eight appointed ordinary committee members are David Hollis, James Jawat, Thadeus Ling Alau, Ganchai Jinta, Petrus Ngalih Tingi, Anthony Ugor Nili, Emas Gijak and Peter Moni.

“They are professionals in various fields from diverse backgrounds. Their appointment is in line with SDNU spirit of umbrella body and inclusivity,” said Mawan.

Mawan also said he has instructed union headquarters to call all 45 branches of SDNU to hold respective triennial general meeting (TGM) in the run up to SDNU triennial general assembly (TGA) slated tentatively on Feb 23 2019 at a venue to be announced later.

A welcoming dinner will be held on Feb 22 2019. SDNU plans to invite Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg to the dinner and TGA welcoming ceremony.

The branches are expected to submit their minutes of meeting, branch resolution and lists of delegates and observers to the party headquarters by Jan 31 2019.

Both Youth and Women wings held their TGM in February and May 2018 respectively.

Nomination of candidates for 39 positions in SEC will be closed a week prior to the TGA date.

In a separate press statement, SDNU clarified that a SEC member Tengku Geruna is still a union member and not disqualified as reported earlier because there was no evidence and expressed intention of his alleged dismissal.
