Man missing after boat rams timber in river

MIRI: The search and rescue (SAR) operations to locate a 55-year-old man who went missing after he was thrown out of his boat which had rammed a piece of timber in Baram River on Wednesday evening will be intensified.

According to Miri Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) chief Law Poh Kiong, operations to locate Lian Ngau from Long Pilah started early yesterday morning.

He said personnel from Marudi Fire and Rescue Station were despatched to the scene after receiving an emergency call from the Marudi district police headquarters about the missing man at 9.20am yesterday.

The incident is believed to have happened when Lian and his wife were on their way back home after collecting durians downstream Baram River near Long Pilah Wednesday evening.

As they were paddling the boat, it drifted into the strong current and later rammed a piece of timber which wrecked the boat.

The victim’s wife managed to cling onto a tree branch in the incident. As of press time, there was still no trace of the man.
