UMS to set up durian research farm project

KOTA KINABALU: Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) is set to play a vital role in the growth of the durian industry in the state as the university will be working with Yun Fook Resources Sdn Bhd to set up a durian research farm project on campus.

Its Vice Chancellor Professor Datuk Dr D Kamaruddin D Mudin said that the university had always emphasized on the importance of biodiversity conservation.

Speaking at the Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) signing ceremony between UMS and Yun Fook Resources Sdn Bhd yesterday, Kamaruddin disclosed that UMS would also be forming a research team that focuses on the study of durians.

He added that the durian research farm project would serve as a long-term project.

Meanwhile, Yun Fook Resources director Datuk Yap Yun Fook pointed out that the signing of the  MoA would make it easier for the UMS students to conduct their researches as they no longer need to travel far.

He said the the durian research farm in UMS would serve as a platform that would smoothen the research and training programmes conducted by the university.

“The lecturers will also be able to monitor the work or their students easily (with the establishment of the farm),” said Yap.

Also present in the event was UMS Board chairman Datuk KY Mustafa.
