KUCHING: The number of dengue cases in Sarawak from Jan 1 until June 10 has gone up by more than three folds compared to the same period last year.
Sarawak Health director Dr Jamilah Hashim said a total 762 cases were recorded as of June 10 this year against 219 cases during the corresponding period in 2018.
Kuching Division recorded the highest number with 264 cases, followed by Miri (98), Betong (95), Sibu (73), Serian (46), Kapit (44), Samarahan (40), Sarikei (38), Bintulu (24), Limbang (18), Sri Aman (16) and Mukah (6).
She also confirmed viral social media postings regarding dengue outbreak at Kampung Ajibah Abol in Kuching. According to her, 37 dengue cases were recorded in Kampung Ajibah Abol from May 13 until
June 8.
“Although the rain and hot weather played a part in the increase of dengue cases, there were also other factors not noticed by many people such as idle land or lots, rubbish disposal area and unoccupied houses.
“Therefore, we would like to remind the public that the war against dengue is a joint responsibility and it needs the efforts and cooperation from everyone of us,” she said yesterday.
She also advised those having fever and living in a dengue outbreak area to immediately seek treatment at the nearest health clinic.
