Firemen monitor the underground fire at the closed Seng Ling dumpsite.

SIBU: The underground fire at the closed Seng Ling dumpsite is expected to be put out in a day or two, says Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Sibu acting chief Wan Kamarudin Wan Ahmad.

“Based on our team monitoring here today (yesterday), there is less smoke emitting from the site. We will continue our operation tomorrow (today) to put out the fire,” he said when contacted yesterday.

Wan Kamarudin revealed that they did not carry out any operation on Friday as firefighters were busy putting out fire at a plywood factory in Jalan Upper Lanang here.

“Today (Saturday), we only carry out monitoring and tomorrow (Sunday), we will continue with the operation,” he reiterated, adding that they had created a fire break while the rain over the past few days helped.

For the record, the landfill at Seng Ling Road here was officially closed in April this year after 18 years. A trench was dug across the access road to the landfill to stop vehicles from entering the area.
