Pedestrian dies, motorcyclist injured in hit-and–run accident

KUCHING: A male pedestrian succumbed to his injuries at the Siburan clinic after he was knocked down by a vehicle in a hit-and-run accident near a traffic light intersection at Mile 17 Jalan Kuchng – Serian around 2pm yesterday.

The same vehicle also knocked down an 18-year-old motorcyclist from Kampung Seratau, Jalan Kuching-Serian who is currently warded at the Sarawak General Hospital with serious head injuries.

Padawan district police chief Supt Aidil Bolhassan who confirmed the case said the deceased has been identified as Ahmad, a 46-year-old from Indonesia. The deceased is a worker at a fast food shop in Mile 17.

“Both victims were knocked down by a vehicle that was heading to Kuching from Serian,” said Aidil in a statement yesterday.

He added that the driver is believed to have lost control of the vehicle as it was nearing the traffic light intersection.

Initial investigations showed that the vehicle collided with the motorcyclist before ramming into the pedestrian who was in the midst of crossing the road.

“Police are still trying to locate the driver and the vehicle that was involved in this case,” said Aidil.

The case will be investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
