LONG LAMA, Telang Usan: People in the rural areas are urged to make reading a way of life as it is not only an honourable habit but also a very important aspect towards improving one’s knowledge.

Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau said reading habit must be inculcated as early as possible among rural children.

“It cannot be denied that due to various reasons, rural kids and even adults do not take reading seriously as compared with urban communities.

“Therefore, it is opportune that Pustaka Negeri Sarawak introduced this Reading Seeds programme to mothers who are expecting and with young children as a way to inculcate in our rural community the importance of reading,” he said when launching a ceremony to hand over reading kits and Reading Seeds workshop for the rural community at Long Lama Community Hall here recently.

“Reading the right materials will help one to expand one’s horizon with the right knowledge,” he added.

More than 50 mothers and fathers with their children took part in the inaugural event.

Dennis expressed his appreciation to Pustaka Negeri Sarawak Miri for choosing Long Lama to hold the event.

“It is not easy to organise events in as far as Long Lama town. This is part of the effort of Gabungan Parti Sarawak state government led by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg to transform rural Sarawak including Telang Usan into a progressive community.

“Therefore, every person in Telang Usan must show their appreciation to the effort by state government,” he said.

Reading Seeds is a literacy programme for children and their parents.

“This programme will encourage parents to play an important role in their children’s development,” Dennis pointed out.
