Shell appoints Sarawakian as VP for Malaysia and Philippines

KUCH­ING: Shell Malaysia has an­nounced the ap­point­ment of Sarawakian Ivan Tan as the new vice pres­i­dent (VP) for Malaysia and Philip­pines and man­ag­ing di­rec­tor of Sarawak Shell Bhd and Sabah Shell Pe­tro­leum Com­pany Lim­ited, ef­fec­tive from Fe­bru­ary 1, 2020.

Tan, who will be based in Miri, joined Shell in 2001. A Sarawakian who grew up in Miri, his early ca­reer com­prised a num­ber of well engi­neer­ing and well op­er­a­tions as­sign­ments in Malaysia; The Nether­lands; New Zealand and China.

Fol­low­ing this, Tan had sev­eral lead­er­ship roles, in­clud­ing gen­eral man­ager Wells Op­er­a­tions and Con­tract­ing and Pro­cure­ment man­ager for Projects in Malaysia.

In April 2014, he was ap­pointed as VP Well HSE, based in The Nether­lands. He then moved to Aus­tralia in Jan­uary 2016 where he was the Tech­ni­cal lead of the Shell/BG in­te­gra­tion team.

In June 2016, Tan was ap­pointed as chief op­er­at­ing of­fi­cer for Ar­row En­ergy, one of Shell’s joint ven­tures.

There, he was re­spon­si­ble for the end-to-end de­liv­ery of ca­pac­ity de­vel­op­ment, projects, wells, as­set man­age­ment and en­ergy mar­kets for Ar­row’s busi­ness in the nat­u­ral gas in­dus­try. Tan was also the co-chair and pres­i­dent of Queens­land Nat­u­ral Gas Ex­plo­ration and the Pro­duc­tion In­dus­try Safety Fo­rum.

There, he was re­spon­si­ble for the end-to-end de­liv­ery of ca­pac­ity de­vel­op­ment, projects, wells, as­set man­age­ment and en­ergy mar­kets for Ar­row’s busi­ness in the nat­u­ral gas in­dus­try. Tan was also the co-chair and pres­i­dent of Queens­land Nat­u­ral Gas Ex­plo­ration and the Pro­duc­tion In­dus­try Safety Fo­rum.

“It’s good to have one of our very own ta­lent, who is known for his strong safety and op­er­a­tional lead­er­ship, lead­ing our Up­stream busi­ness,” Shell Malaysia chair­man Datuk Iain Lo said.

“Ivan per­son­ally led a step change in safety cul­ture and con­trib­uted to­wards a stronger and more sus­tain­able op­er­a­tional ca­pa­bil­ity, in his pre­vi­ous role. I am con­fi­dent that he will fur­ther drive our Up­stream busi­ness in bring­ing value for our cus­tomers and for Shell.”

Tan holds a Bach­e­lor of Engi­neer­ing (Me­chan­i­cal) with First Class Hon­ours from Im­pe­rial Col­lege, Lon­don and a Mas­ter’s in Busi­ness Ad­min­is­tra­tion with Dis­tinc­tion from Manch­ester Busi­ness School, United King­dom.
