BINTULU: Bintulu Development Authority (BDA) has identified a few sectors and development to be implemented in support of its existing economic activities in Bintulu, said Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.

Abang Johari, who is also BDA chairman, said one of the most awaited projects would be building affordable houses for the people, with Jepak and Kidurong identified as sites for the project.

“The state government will build affordable houses priced between RM90,000 and RM100,000 each in Jepak.

“The house will sit on a 10-point land and the infrastructural cost would be borne by the state government,” he said during a BDA board meeting here yesterday.

In terms of cost, Abang Johari said one-third, involving land and infrastructure, would be of borne by the state government.

“You only have to buy the house. The market price for such a house would be at least RM300,000. This one is priced at only RM100,000,” he said.

For the project in Kidurong, the chief minister said the state government would build the affordable houses on a 30-acre site.

He added that the state government had only identified the locations for the two projects, and was now focusing on providing basic infrastructure in the areas.

In Jepak, for instance, the construction of the Bintulu-Jepak bridge which is progressing smoothly would further expand Bintulu town, he pointed out.

“Along with the bridge, we will also build other infrastructure facilities such as commercial centres in the housing area.”

Other issues discussed during the board meeting were the upgrading of the drainage system in Bintulu to resolve problems associated with flash floods.

Abang Johari said the state government had allocated funds for the project which will be carried out by the Department of Irrigation and Drainage.
