KOTA KINABALU: Umno Putatan urges Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) to return the Putatan parliamentary seat to the party to contest in the 15th General Election.
Its division chief, Jeffery Nor Mohamed said this is because the Putatan parliamentary seat traditionally belongs to Barisan Nasional (BN) and was contested by Upko when it was with the coalition.
BN lost the seat to PKR’s Awang Husaini Sahari in the 14th general election in 2018.
Speaking to reporters after officiating the joint opening of Umno Putatan’s Youth, Women, Puteri movements’ annual general meeting in Dewan Sri Putatan on Saturday, Jeffery said the call to allow Umno to contest in the parliamentary constituency was one of the resolutions tabled at the meeting.
“Another reason why we seek that Umno be given the opportunity to contest in the seat is the composition of residents in Putatan. We hope that Perikatan Nasional (PN) and BN will agree to this,” he said.
Jeffery however stressed that if Umno will be contesting in the seat, the candidate must also be from Umno Putatan as the individual would be more in the know of the people and issues in the constituency.
Jeffery also said that Umno Putatan wants the party to be included in official decision making with regards to the administration of the constituency.
“We urge all parties to involve Umno in decision making on the cooperation, appointment and official decision making at the Putatan administrative level,” he said.
He added that Umno Putatan has no issues with PN but said that their opinion is that there must be sincerity in the cooperation between both parties.
“The cooperation must be tightened so that we can help the rakyat and take care of their welfare,” he said, adding it will be difficult to work together without sincerity.
According to him, it is Umno Putatan’s hope that the cooperation can be strengthened and be a two-way communication between all involved.
