Tadung Sawin, Sayun Dawai and Jeffery Sulan have been named as members-at-large of a gang that specialised at robbing bird’s nest farms.

SIBU (June 22): The police here have formed a special team to hunt down three at-large members of a gang that specialised in robbing bird’s nest farms.

Sibu police chief ACP Stanley Jonathan Ringgit named the trio as Tadung Sawin, 31, Sayun Dawai, 49, and Jeffery Sulan, 42, during a press conference yesterday.

According to him, the three were members of ‘Geng Joseph’ which had robbed six bird’s nest farms here and inflicted losses totalling RM53,000.

“The gang’s leader, a 33-year-old local, and his three accomplices aged 21, 30 and 41 were arrested in four raids conducted last month.

“All four of them are under remand as we continue to identify the locations where they had committed their crimes,” said Stanley.

Also seized from the four suspects during their arrest were a car, guitar and mobile phone, he added.

Stanley said the gang targeted bird’s nest houses located in the outskirts of Sibu town, either at night or early in the morning.

“They would arm themselves with hammers and machetes, and would act aggressively if discovered by the caretaker of their targeted premises, by assaulting and tying up their victims.

“They would also threaten their victims using the machetes,” he said.

According to Stanley, there has been an increase in the number of robberies at bird’s nest houses during the Movement Control Order (MCO), as travel restrictions prevented owners from visiting their farms which are mostly located in the outskirts or rural areas.

Present at the press conference were Sibu deputy police chief Supt Collin Babat and Sibu CID head DSP Hadian Keria.
